Dunkirk terminal starts commercial operations
2017/01/03
Commercial operations started up at the Dunkirk terminal which is the second largest LNG imports facility in the European mainland.
Commercial operations started up at the Dunkirk terminal which is the second largest LNG imports facility in the European mainland and is the only one in Europe to be directly connected to two consumption markets: France and Belgium as its annual regasification capacity of 13 BCM/Y accounts for more than 20% of French and Belgian natural gas consumption.
Dunkirk is located at the crossroads of the seaways between the Channel and the North Sea close to natural gas consumption markets in France and North-Western Europe.
The terminal is composed of:
* A jetty that can receive up to 150 LNG tankers per year (with capacity of 65,000-CM up to 267,000-CM);
* Five articulated arms are installed to unload the LNG tankers at maximum flow rate of 14,000 CM/hour;
* Three 200,000-CM LNG storage tanks;
* Regasification unit made up of 10 heat exchangers, supplied with tepid water by the neighbouring nuclear power plant in Gravelines with an underwater tunnel 5-Km long.
Dunkirk LNG had received its first commissioning cargo on 8 Jul. 2016. The shipment which was bought by the terminal’s main shareholder, Electricite de France (EDF), was loaded at Nigerian LNG plant and carried by Spain-flagged Madrid Spirit LNG tanker (built in 2004).
The Dunkerque LNG terminal is owned and operated by Dunkerque LNG, a company 65% owned by EDF, 25% by Fluxys and 10% by Total.
