LNG imports is an essential need for South Africa

South Africa imports about 90% of its natural gas demand from Mozambique but gas supply is expected to cease by the first quarter of 2028, following rapid production decline from the Sasol-operated Pande-Teman processing facilities.
Therefore, the country’s energy policymakers should take essential decisions to avoid gas supply shortages in the near future.

Last week, Sasol confirmed that it is reducing natural gas production at its Pande facility to ensure the safety of its staff and assets amid widespread unrest following a disputed Mozambique’s election in October. “We have informed various gas users and our customers that we are not able to supply gas at full production rates to maintain stability of the gas value chain infrastructure and pipeline network.”

According to the Global LNG Database®, two LNG import projects have been proposed to be built inside and outside South Africa, aiming at supplying regasified LNG to the country:
The most advanced project is the TotalEnergies-proposed 2.5 MMT/Y Matola floating LNG import project in Mozambique, which would export the regasified LNG via the existing Rompco gas pipeline to South Africa’s largest cities, Johannesburg and Pretoria.
The French operator expects to take a final investment decision on the project in 2025 with a start-up in 2027.
As the needed gas transportation infrastructure is available for this project, it could be commenced in a short time; however the instable political situation in Mozambique may undermine its development.

The second proposed project is the 2 MMT/Y Richards Bay floating LNG imports project, which is planned to supply regasified LNG to Durban in 2028.
