2025 began with a high expectation that LNG market would continue to be tight because delays in the commissioning of some LNG export projects and sanctions against Russian LNG export projects have limited new supply to the market.

The LNG supply constraint will support high gas prices in Europe and Asia, while any unplanned LNG supply disruptions like what the market experienced after outages at the Freeport LNG plant in the US, would substantially push up prices, especially in the next winter.

In addition, high uncertainty about exporting-importing countries’ energy, financial and monetary policies, the expiration of the Russia-Ukraine gas transit agreement, geopolitical challenges, and a possible US-China trade war would affect the market stability in 2025 and beyond that.

This year, most of the new LNG will come from US as Venture Global-operated Plaquemines LNG export project (Phase 1) has started production and dispatched the first commissioning cargo and Chenier-operated Corpus Christi-Stage 3 project has started production with its first commissioning cargo expected to export in the first quarter of 2025.

US LNG exports reached 88.3 MMT in 2024, up 4.5% YoY, ensuring the country maintained its crown as the world's largest LNG exporter, according to LSEG. Europe and Asia accounted for 55% and 34% of last year’s total US LNG exports, respectively.

In the other locations:
* BP-operated Tortue Ahmeyim LNG (Phase1) project in Mauritania/Senegal has recently started upstream gas production and expected to start LNG production in the first quarter of 2025.
* Shell-led LNG Canada is expected to start LNG production in the second quarter of this year.
* Nigerian LNG (T7) is expected to start LNG production in the fourth quarter of 2025.
* Santos-operated Barossa to Darwin (Darwin LNG plant's life extension) project in Australia is scheduled to start operation in the fourth quarter of this year.

In addition, some other expansion-debottlenecking projects and new trains are under-construction in Russia, Congo,…which would increase the existing LNG plants’ production capacity in 2025.
